Band Poster

The poster below represents a hand drawing on my shower wall. I used black marker to draw and write the information. Took a photograph of it and edited in photoshop. My classmates suggested to change the font color, but is impossible since is part of the photograph. They also suggested to brighten up the poster so that the writing would be more visible.

Why might the artist have used the particular setting?
figure/ground relationships?

The figure is an airy, almost transparent, stony figure that gives a theatrical feel, but not a well defined, detailed one. The background is believed to be the sky, but the artist has chosen an urban gray-green color that defines the mood of the poster but also to reach the intended audience.

What is the artists saying with the composition?

The composition successfully suggests the type of the concert: free to public, everybody can attend. Is definitely not a sophisticated concert but more like students from music school performing.
What is the artists saying with light?
The contrast of light and dark is crucial for the composition of the poster. the figure is constructed by the mixture of light, shade and one mid-tone. The contrast created gives drama and also creates the theatrical feel.

How might you evoke similarly without any text?

In the re-creation of the object, I also played with with the light and dark to create that contrast and drama. I created my figure by putting together little pieces of light and shadow. To add volume, I also added the mid-tone to define the clothing.

How might you change the mood without any text in a manner that stays true to the original artwork?

I did try to change the mood a little bit while still using the style of the original artwork. my poster still has that airiness and movement but I created a more modern figure. I still have the same figure-ground relationship but while the original figure has a more stony feel to it my figure is more lively.

Example Poster

The color palette of the poster above, brings a combination of different muted hues. This combination between the De-intensified urban hues and aged naturals is successfully used to create the intended mood since the poster calls for the public. The palette reflects the audience to whom the artist sends the message to. An urban palette is created. The aged naturals reflect the slums. The illustration of the poster strongly supports the style. A comparison between the slums and new housing plans is reflected. Since infant mortality is blamed on the bad condition of the old housings, the designer brings the image of death in the background. The poster's convincing message, that a change is needed, is successfully created by the artist by both the urban palette and the death symbol. The poster is convincing, after all everybody is scared of death...

Example Poster

In this next poster the Art Deco style is reflecting. The palette chosen drives the style away from nature to a more industrialized, futuristic style. The poster invites the public to a photography exhibition. The Art Deco palette is a combination of urban hues, warm, cool grays and saturated pinks and violets. Optimism and sophistication is created. The illustration composed of geometric shapes and forms also underlines the industrialized, futuristic image. There is a perfect harmony between the palette and the illustration in the poster. The message is being successfully delivered to the audience.

Example Poster

Music,Dancing, Singing - as these words already are telling us, this poster should have movement in it underlined by color palette and the illustration. The palette indeed is more intense, active. In an active palette the intense hues are usually a combination of the primary, secondary and tertiary colors and these color combination suggest excitement, vacation, travel and adventure as Jim Krause states in "Color Index." The designer chooses the intense blues and orange because of the audience who is young and active and because the poster is an invitation to a carnival which is full of vitality. The illustration adds more movement. The movement of water is emphasized by the exaggerated water waves and also by the boat which is played by the waves. In my opinion this perfectly organized poster reaches the audience convincing them to take part in this exciting event.
